IBR, image base rendering, techniques have been used for some time in computer graphics. They are now being applied to assist in volume rendering. In particular, they lend themselves well to distributed environments where some of the rendering can be done where the data is and some can be done on the local workstation. Also, the speed of the network and the size of the data can be factored into this distribution of effort.
Current work on this at LBNL/NERSC for SC '99 and in NGI will be discussed. This involves using many technologies being develop here - both software and hardware. This is very much open-ended work in progress. Refreshments are planned and there may be a demonstration.
