UTCHEM VR Project - circa Spring, 1993


The purpose of this project was to explore "using virtual reality" in the context of scientific visualization. Using a Spaceball as the VR input device, we created some AVS Modules. The AVS modules perform such tasks as read events from the input device, manipulate geometric objects and so forth. In addition, the VR input device is used to manipulate a subset of the input parameters to the numerical simulation itself.

This work was conducted during 1993, when the Visualization Group was partially funded by LBNL directly to work with lab scientists. This project is an example of a highly successful collaboration between Computing Sciences and the Earth Sciences Division. This project directly resulted in several notable accomplishments:
